Jakarta. Indonesia’s National Covid-19 Task Force on Friday reported 48 more patients had died from coronavirus-related diseases in the past 24 hours, bringing the country’s total death toll from Covid-19 to 1,326 as the rise in cases continues to pick up pace since May 12.
Confirmed cases of the disease increased by 634 – the fourth highest rise in a day since the outbreak began – to a total of 20,796.
Five single-day records of new cases have occurred during the past ten days, when the lowest daily rise was 484.
In that period, the country reported a total of 6531 Covid-19 cases, a whopping 30.4 percent of the overall tally.
“It only confirms that transmissions are continuing to occur as people ignore calls to wash hands frequently with soap, wear masks, observe physical distancing and avoid mass gatherings,” Covid-19 Task Force spokesman Achmad Yurianto said in a video conference in Jakarta.
He said the number of patients recovering from Covid-19 also increased by 219 since Thursday to 5,057, while the number of probable cases at hospitals (PDP) still hovered around 11,000.
National Emergency
Covid-19 Task Force Head Doni Monardo indicated the national emergency status might be extended beyond the May 29 expiry date given current development.
The status will remain in place if new cases and deaths caused by coronavirus continue to spike, Doni said in a statement.
“The number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 had kept growing until yesterday. It’s important to note that the significant number of cases this month showed prolonged local transmissions,” he said.
The country reported 973 new cases on Thursday, the highest ever since the first cases were announced on March 2.
“As long as [Covid-19] continues to be a global pandemic without a proven cure or a workable vaccine, the national emergency will remain in place,” he said.
