Jakarta. Indonesian authorities said Tuesday there is no plan to suspend the use of AstraZeneca vaccine amid reports that a man in East Jakarta died one day after receiving the first jab of the UK vaccine.
The family of the deceased has blamed the vaccine for causing his death but a lack of postmortem examination makes it unlikely to verify the claim.
Trio Fauki Firdaus, 22, received his first AstraZeneca dose on May 5 and suffered headache, fever and muscle pain upon arriving home in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta, the family has said.
He wasn’t admitted to hospital, nor did he take any painkiller on that day.
The following morning, his headache was worsening while also having shortness of breath and convulsions, older brother Sabbihis Fatun told news website Suara.
“He was a healthy man without underlying conditions,” the brother said.
Trio, who participated in the vaccination program arranged by his employer state-run pawning company Pegadaian at Bung Karno sporting complex, was admitted to the nearest hospital after he lose consciousness, around 24 hours after he took the jab.
He died before emergency medical procedures were taken.
“It was because of the vaccine. He was healthy until he received the vaccine on Wednesday, and he died on Thursday,” the brother said.
National Covid-19 Task Force spokesman Wiku Adisasmito said the government doesn’t halt AstraZeneca uses, but it monitors further investigation by the National Commission for Post-Vaccination Effects regarding the incident.
“As far as I’m concerned, there is no decision on delaying the use of AstraZeneca vaccine,” Wiku said in a news conference in Jakarta.
Commission chairman Hindra Irawan Satari said earlier AstraZeneca vaccine is not associated with Trio’s death due to a lack of evidence.
“The National Commission and its Jakarta chapter conducted a joint audit on Friday and we came to a conclusion that this incident is not associated with the vaccination drive. We need further investigation into the matter,” Hindra said.
According to data from the commission, there is no fatal incident directly related to Covid-19 vaccination in Indonesia.
Indonesia first took delivery of AstraZeneca vaccine on March 8 through UN-backed global supply scheme Covax and by Monday it has received a total of 6.4 million AstraZeneca doses.
Indonesia has administered more than 13 million doses of Covid vaccine, a majority of which were supplied by China’s Sinovac Biotech, since the campaign began on January 13.
