Three cases of the Omicron mutation of COVID-19 have sparked calls for a surveillance intervention to prevent a third wave of infections ahead of the Christmas holidays. Indonesia was one of the latest nations to report confirmed cases of the more contagious variant, after weeks of being on high alert as the strain swept across the world and was detected in 89 countries, including neighboring states. It was also one of the more lenient countries in terms of imposing travel and activity restrictions when the variant was reported, which sparked calls for more vigilance, especially after two more Omicron cases were confirmed on Friday among returning travelers.

Widening US sanctions make it harder to invest in Myanmar, but will not change much
F
BANGKOK – Top United States diplomat Antony Blinken visited Indonesia and Malaysia this week after Washington announced sanctions on another list of military-linked entities and individuals in Myanmar.
Few expect the sanctions declared on Dec 10 to change the status quo in Myanmar’s political crisis. But the growing list of targeted entities – and the threat of more – is narrowing the space for international corporations to invest in Myanmar, say consultants. Such concerns will also hang over companies in Singapore, from which many multinational companies invest in Myanmar.

The death toll from the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines this year surpassed 200 on Monday, as desperate survivors pleaded for urgent supplies of drinking water and food.
The Philippine Red Cross reported “complete carnage” in coastal areas after Typhoon Rai left homes, hospitals and schools “ripped to shreds”.
The storm tore off roofs, uprooted trees, toppled concrete power poles, smashed wooden houses to pieces, wiped out crops and flooded villages — sparking comparisons with Super Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) announced on Wednesday (Dec 22) that travel restrictions will be tightened amid a surge in Omicron cases in several countries and regions.
The move will buy Singapore time to shore up its defences against the new Covid-19 variant, the ministry said.

9. THAILAND:
Thailand reports first local Omicron case
BANGKOK (CNA) – Thailand is considering reinstating mandatory quarantine for foreign visitors due to concerns over the spread of Omicron, as the health ministry reported yesterday the country’s first case of local transmission of the coronavirus variant.
The public health ministry will propose scrapping a quarantine waiver for vaccinated visitors and revert to hotel quarantine and a “sandbox” programme, which allows free movement in specific locations, Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said.
The proposal was driven by worries over the spread of Omicron, Anutin told the Inside Thailand television show, adding it will be made to the government’s COVID-19 taskforce “soon”.
The minister’s remarks come after Thailand re-opened to foreign visitors in November, ending nearly 18 months of strict entry policies that contributed to a collapse in tourism, a key industry and economic driver that drew 40 million visitors in 2019.
Thailand had detected 63 people infected with the Omicron variant so far, Anutin said, with one case of local transmission and the rest imported cases.
