MANILA, Philippines — The independent analytics group OCTA Research on Sunday estimated that Metro Manila’s actual COVID-19 cases could be six to 15 times higher than the official numbers being reported by the Department of Health (DOH) in its daily case bulletins.

OCTA Research fellow Guido David said they reached this estimate based on the random rapid tests conducted by the Department of Transportation on railway passengers on Jan. 12 and Jan. 13 wherein 12.4 percent of those tested were positive for the virus.

Mu coronavirus variant

Assuming Metro Manila’s population of 14 million, this meant an estimated prevalence range of infection of 7.4 to 17.4 percent (based on a margin of error of plus or minus 5), which David said could mean that about 1.04 million to 2.44 million people in Metro Manila were infected as of Jan. 13.

Since the official data reported only 165,000 active COVID-19 cases (or people still sick with the virus) in Metro Manila that day, David said “this means that the actual number of cases, which include asymptomatic and symptomatic cases not tested, and those tested with antigen but not reported, could be six to 15 times higher than the official numbers reported by the DOH.”

Cambodia’s efforts to solve the Myanmar crisis is receiving increasing support from leaders of countries, a good omen towards ironing out issues.

Laos Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh have expressed their support for Prime Minister Hun Sen’s initiatives in addressing the situation in Myanmar, as have Japan, China and Australia among others.

The French Ambassador to Cambodia has said his country will support Cambodia and its special envoy in all efforts to solve such a dilemma in accordance with Asean’s Five-Point Consensus that must be the action plan of the international community and Myanmar.

As the Myanmar crisis continues to loom large, ASEAN foreign ministers are slated to meet for their annual retreat next week in Siem Reap, Cambodia, in a potential setup for a heated discussion following Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s widely criticized visit to Myanmar over the weekend. Cambodia, as the current ASEAN chair, has the complicated task of handling the protracted humanitarian, political and economic crises in an ASEAN member state, nearly a year after the Myanmar military ousted its democratically elected government on Feb. 1, 2021.

Telenor to sell Wave Money stake to Yoma in move to exit Myanmar

Telenor Group agreed to sell a remaining 51% stake in a mobile financial services provider in Myanmar in a deal that will see Norway’s biggest telecommunications firm move a step closer to exiting a country that has seen increased civilian strife since a military coup last year.

The stake in Digital Money Myanmar, also known as Wave Money, will be sold to Singapore-listed Yoma Strategic Holdings Ltd., which will lead a consortium of investors to fund the $53 million purchase, the companies said in a stock exchange filing Monday. Yoma Strategic is controlled by Myanmar-born property tycoon Serge Pun.

Telenor last year also agreed to sell its mobile operations in Myanmar to Beirut-based M1 Group for $105 million. However there have been reports of a delay in closing the deal as the junta wants a Myanmar buyer instead and Pun is seen as one of the interested parties for the assets.

The Norwegian firm is among the companies leaving Myanmar, which has plunged in to a turmoil after the February coup led by army chief Min Aung Hlaing. The latest deal means Yoma will be the largest shareholder of Wave Money, which handled $8.7 billion in remittance and payments in 2020, accounting for around 12% of the country’s gross domestic product.

The agreement also completes the divestment process announced in June 2020, when Telenor sold 34% in Wave Money for $76.5 million. Wave Money was formed in 2016 as a joint venture between Telenor, Yoma Bank and Yoma Strategic Holdings.

SINGAPORE – Life will never return to exactly the way it was before the pandemic, experts told The Straits Times.

This view was shared by 28 per cent of respondents in an online survey of 1,000 people, commissioned by The Straits Times and conducted by market research firm Milieu Insight from Jan 6 to 10.

The respondents, who are all Singaporeans, are representative of the Singaporean population aged 16 and above by age and gender.

nd contact-tracing precision to home-based recovery scheme, Singapore has emerged much more resilient to handling Covid-19 and its variants in 2021,” he said.

Noting that Singapore had one of the lowest mortality and highest vaccination rates in the world, he added: “However, we must not forget the sacrifices made to achieve Singapore’s progress and current success… Restrictions to stop or slow the spread of the virus often have (a) heavy toll on many aspects of life, economy, and society.”

Having endured the pandemic for the last two years, Thailand’s workforce gradually changed over that period as many unemployed people started to run their own business or work as freelancers.

More than a few companies are now lamenting they cannot find staff in time for a recovery.

Migrant workers who were laid off moved back to their countries during the peak of the pandemic last year and have not returned to Thailand, partly because of enhanced border-crossing restrictions.
