The country’s banking sector was jolted by the revelation earlier this week by the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition that more than 11 anguished public school teachers saw their accounts with Land Bank of the Philippines drained of between P26,000 and P121,000 each, in yet another painful incident of cybercrime.

Indeed, digital banking is here to stay due to the increased convenience it has undeniably afforded Filipinos.

But the BSP as well as the banks and financial institutions that promote its growth should pull out all the stops and ensure that its exponential growth will not be marred by a corresponding surge in cybercrime that has already victimized far too many Filipinos.

EDITORIAL- ‘Mango theft’ and elusive justice

January 26, 2022

The story of “mango thief” Leonardo Flores of Asingan, Pangasinan, continues to unfold, raising hope of resolution in the best interests of the parties. The contentions that are slowly being revealed provide a glimpse of how the wheels of justice grind in rural areas. That Imelda Marcos’ graft conviction trended immediately after Flores’ story went viral online serves as reminder of how differently these same wheels turn in high places, and suggests that some Filipinos don’t forget.

Justice: what a tangled, complicated, and tortuous concept in these parts. How long do we wait for all those high and mighty convicted of graft or plunder to apologize and atone for all the pain and suffering they’ve inflicted on Filipinos during their term?

EDITORIAL – Teachers scammed

January 27, 2022
EDITORIAL - Teachers scammed

Five persons including two Nigerians have been arrested in connection with the recent hacking of the BDO Unibank, with deposits from about 700 accounts transferred to UnionBank of the Philippines under the account name Mark Nagoyo.

Crooks, however, are undeterred. The latest victims are teachers and non-teaching personnel of the Department of Education. The Teacher’s Dignity Coalition says it has filed 24 verified complaints with the DepEd for unauthorized withdrawals from the victims’ payroll accounts with the Land Bank of the Philippines ranging from P900 up to P200,000 per account.

<>
The National Bureau of Investigation has stepped into the probe, and the Landbank must give its full cooperation. At the same time, authorities can take this opportunity to heighten public awareness of online scams. The information campaign can start with the educators, who can then cascade their knowledge to their students and other people.

Still, in the interest of public accountability, transparency and good governance, the nation’s highest officials should release their SALNs to the public, even without mass media invoking freedom of information and seeking the public disclosure. It’s called leadership by example, and the public should remember the persons showing this quality as they apply for high office.

EDITORYAL – Face-to-face classes, ipagpaliban muna

EDITORYAL - Face-to-face classes, ipagpaliban muna

<>
