Brunei detects 13 local Omicron cases

.
Samples from 570 COVID-19 cases detected in Brunei Darussalam as of yesterday underwent gene sequencing testing, out of which, 520 cases were confirmed as Delta variant while 50 were Omicron variant.
The Omicron cases included 37 import and 13 local cases.
This was said by Minister of Health Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham bin Haji Jaafar during a press conference on the latest updates of the COVID-19 situation in Brunei yesterday.
“So far, there are no Omicron cases recorded in the country categorised under Category 4 and 5 or requiring oxygen assistance and intensive care. Those who have been infected showed mild symptoms or are asymptomatic.”
Those yet to take the COVID-19 vaccination or booster dose are advised to do so at vaccination centres in the country, the minister added.
“As gene sequencing takes time to be tested, the public is urged to take vaccination or booster shots if they have not done so. This is one way to manage and control transmission in the community. The public is also reminded to follow all standard operating procedures (SOPs) and guidelines that have been outlined.”
Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Mohd Isham said the 13 local cases are sourced from private residence clusters, indicating an Omicron variant spread in the country. The public is urged to not feel anxious as the Omicron variants will result in mild or light symptoms compared to the Delta variant.
The public is also advised to take precautionary measures to curb the transmission.

A third wave of the coronavirus pandemic has begun to take hold across the country, with the Omicron variant of the virus believed to have driven a surge in cases and hospitalization in the capital, where more than 80 percent of the population has been vaccinated.
,
On Thursday, the country saw 8,077 new confirmed COVID-19 cases, the highest official daily caseload since August last year when the country was struggling to contain the Delta-induced second wave, which peaked at 56,757 cases a month earlier.
.
While studies have shown that Omicron is less virulent than its predecessors, experts have warned that the high transmissibility of the variant could lead to a spike in cases that could disastrously overwhelm the healthcare system.ess:
