Old video of huge Philippine arena event shared in false posts about ‘Marcos Jr rally’

As the presidential candidates in the Philippines hit the hustings for the three-month campaign, a video clip was viewed tens of thousands of times in posts that claim it shows a Philippine arena packed full of supporters for presidential frontrunner Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr and vice-presidential candidate Sara Duterte. Although the pair did attract a large crowd at a rally in early February to kick off their campaign, the video has been shared in a false context. The footage actually shows the inauguration of a church-owned arena that was attended by late president Benigno Aquino III in 2014.

The 54-second clip shows a packed crowd inside a stadium doing a synchronised wave.

The caption alongside the video in this TikTok post published on February 9, 2022 claims it shows a rally for Marcos Jr, known by his supporters as “BBM“, and his running mate Sara Duterte, daughter of current president Rodrigo Duterte.

The pair launched their bid for office under the banner “Uniteam BBM-Sara“.

The post’s Tagalog-language caption translates in part as: “This isn’t enough, but wow, I got goosebumps. All solid BBM SARAH [sic] uniteam”.

The post also included the hashtags “#bbmfor2022president” and “#bbmfor2022pres”.

Voter surveys show Marcos Jr heading towards a landslide victory over Leni Robredo from the opposition Liberal Party, as AFP reported here.

Comments on the video indicated some social media users believed it shows the 2022 rally which officially launched his campaign.

“Wow! BBM and Sarah Duterte have so many supporters”, wrote one.

“BBM-Sara: a sure win!” wrote another.

The clip was also shared here on TikTok, and hereherehere and here on Facebook alongside a similar claim.

However, the video has been shared in a false context.

Inauguration event

AFP found the video actually shows an event at the Philippine Arena in 2014 which was attended by late president Benigno Aquino III, the then head of the Liberal Party.

Keyword searches online traced the video back to this 80-second clip published on July 22, 2014 on a YouTube channel.

The YouTube user who uploaded the clip identified herself as Yanda Flores and said she recorded it in 2014.

“The event shown is the opening or inauguration day of the Philippine [A]rena”, she told AFP.

The Philippine Arena was built by Iglesia ni Cristo (Church of Christ) to mark its centenary.

The video’s title reads: “Inauguration

Philippine broadcasters ABS-CBN and GMA News also reported on the inauguration of the arena on July 21, 2014.

The ABS-CBN segment was headlined “[President Benigno Aquino III] inaugurates INC’s Philippine Arena”.
