ASEANEWS-HEADLINE | Paper Edition: US-ASEAN SUMMIT: VIENTIANE, Laos- Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh departs for US-Asean Summit in Washington

Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh on Tuesday departed Vientiane to attend the US-Asean Special Summit scheduled to take place in Washington, DC on May 12 and 13.

Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Vientiane, Joy M. Sakurai, saw the PM off at Wattay International Airport to bid him “safe travels” to Washington, according to the US Embassy.

President Joe Biden will host the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) in the US capital for the Summit, US Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in an earlier statement.

The Special Summit demonstrates the United States’ enduring commitment to Asean, recognising its central role in delivering sustainable solutions to the region’s most pressing challenges, Ms Jen  Psaki said. The summit commemorates 45 years of US-Asean relations.

This is the second Special Summit since 2016 and the first in- person engagement for the leaders since 2017
