HEADLINE: US-ASEAN SUMMIT: VIENTIANE, Laos- Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh departs for US-Asean Summit in Washington
President Joe Biden will host the leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) in the US capital for the Summit, US Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in an earlier statement.
The Special Summit demonstrates the United States’ enduring commitment to Asean, recognising its central role in delivering sustainable solutions to the region’s most pressing challenges, Ms Jen Psaki said. The summit commemorates 45 years of US-Asean relations.
This is the second Special Summit since 2016 and the first in- person engagement for the leaders since 2017

Asean leaders and President Joe Biden will meet to discuss ways and means to intensify cooperation in various areas, Cambodia as the Chair of Asean said in a statement posted on the Asean Secretariat’s website.
The areas to be discussed to deepen cooperation include the Covid-19 response and global health security, climate change, sustainable development, maritime cooperation, human capital development, education and people-to-people ties, as well as connectivity and economic engagement.
The leaders will also exchange views on regional and international issues of common interest and concern.
“The Special Summit will also reiterate our shared commitment to uphold Asean Centrality and unity through the existing Asean-led mechanisms, as well as to foster mutual trust and confidence to maintain peace, stability and prosperity in the region,” the Asean Chairman said.

The US is the second largest trading partner among Asean’s dialogue partners with a total two-way trade of US$294.6 billion in 2019, according to Asean preliminary statistics.
The US was also Asean’s largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in 2019 with a total inflow of US$24.5 billion.
