US Capitol riot Fil-Am participant who carried walis tambo sent to prison
Kene Brian Lazo, the Filipino-American who brought a walis tambo (broom) during the January 6 attack on the United States (US) Capitol, has been sentenced to 45 days in jail on Thursday (August 18).
Lazo was among the thousands of supporters of former US President Donald Trump identified to have violently and unlawfully breached the US Capitol as Congress is in session to certify the results of the 2020 election which declared Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the president and vice president of the United States.
Along with the jail term, the US District Court for the District of Columbia has also given him a $500 restitution.
Lazo was identified by the Federal Bureau of Investigation through his social media posts. According to the court’s statement of offense, aside from the broom, he also wore “a black helmet and orange goggles, and had an American flag draped around his neck like a cape,” and also brought with him a Captain America costume with its roundshield attached to the broom.
Before the Capitol riot, he posted on his Facebook account that he is “going to stand for America,” and after, he said that he “took a boi boi to the Capitol and swept the floor literally.”
Although he has since expressed remorse over his participation in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, Lazo was arrested by FBI agents on May 28, 2021, in Norfolk, Virginia.
He first appeared before the court on June 3, 2021, and in June 23, he was officially charged with, “Knowingly entering or remaining in a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds without lawful authority; disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds or in a Capitol building; and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building.”
He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on August 3, 2021, but on March 7, 2022, he pleaded guilty of all charges.
Aside from this, Lazo is also facing a sexual battery case of a child in Virginia a few months after the Capitol riot.
