Amid calls to explore alternative ways to resolve the protracted Myanmar coup crisis, ASEAN chair Indonesia is launching a review of the implementation of the bloc’s Five-Point Consensus (5PC) for peace.

The announcement came after a closed-door meeting on Wednesday on the latest developments in Naypyidaw, including reports of a top Thai diplomat meeting with ousted Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi, which some factions say has subverted the bloc’s Myanmar strategy and Indonesia’s leadership.

On the third day of the 56th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) in Jakarta, Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi announced the start of the 5PC review. At the upcoming summit in September, the bloc’s foreign ministers will offer their recommendations on the matter to leaders of ASEAN member states.
