Members of Asean police forces are enhancing their partnership in the promotion of peace, security and stability as well as stepping up cooperation in tackling transnational crimes such as drug smuggling, terrorism, human trafficking, and the weapons trade.
The 41st ASEANAPOL Conference to discuss a stronger regional partnership opened in Vientiane on Tuesday.
.
Those present included Laos’ Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Security, General Vilay Lakhamfong, delegations from other Asean member countries, negotiators and observer countries.
Speaking at the conference, General Vilay said “The 41st ASEANAPOL Conference takes place in an environment with both facilities and many challenges.”
“This conference is an important meeting because it demonstrates the intention of cooperation in police work between member countries, Asean police, negotiating partners and observer countries to solve the problem of transnational crimes such as drug smuggling, terrorism, human trafficking, the weapons trade, illegal wildlife trade, maritime crime, commercial crime, credit card forgery, transnational fraud, forgery of travel documents, computer crime and other crimes that threaten political stability, economic security and socio-cultural development in the region and internationally.”
“Therefore, this conference is very important for increasing cooperation both at the regional and global levels in responding to various crimes in order to ensure the region and communities around the world enjoy peace, tranquility and stability.”
The meeting is an opportunity for representatives of Asean member countries, negotiating partner countries and observers, including regional and international organisations, to work together to prevent and combat transnational crime in order to actively contribute to ensuring peace and order in society and respond to the demands of combating transnational crime, making the Asean police a platform for cooperation in the field of police expertise.
The meeting will discuss issues of common interest to gradually produce results.
.
It was proposed that the Asean police continue to uphold unity, adhere to cooperation efforts to prevent, suppress and fight transnational crime, especially drug trafficking, raw chemicals used by criminal groups as ingredients for drug production, human trafficking, etc.
At the same time, delegates are cooperating to implement policies, strategies and other legislation related to solving the problem of transnational crime and the implementation of the joint statements of meetings held every year to ensure good results.
It was recommended to enhance cooperation and mutual assistance in police work to make the Asean region a region of peace, friendship and cooperation.
This will be done by strengthening the role of the Asean Police Secretariat so that it becomes a meaningful representative of Asean member countries in cooperation and information collection to serve the prevention and fight against transnational crime in the region and globally.
.
It was suggested that Asean member countries, negotiating partner countries and observers increase their efforts to upgrade the capacity of their police forces so they are better equipped to link with the region and the international community in combatting transnational crime.
This will be achieved by sharing lessons learnt, experiences and information on the problem of transnational crime, within the scope of bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
