Access to clean water has become a common issue amid the current prolonged dry season. In recognition of this situation, Pertamina continues its efforts to meet the needs of the Indonesian people, including their need for access to clean water and sanitation, as part of the company’s commitment to corporate social and environmental responsibility (CSER).

From 2022 to October 2023, Pertamina has supported the public’s access to clean water through 77 clean water access programs spread across 44 cities and regencies in 21 provinces throughout Indonesia, including in East Nusa Tenggara, East Kalimantan, Riau, South Sumatra, Banten, Central Java, East Java and West Java.

Pertamina carried out the 77 clean water access programs by adjusting them to the conditions of each region. Therefore, the assistance mechanisms vary from well drilling to find new sources of water, piping assistance to connect with sources of water located more than 5 kilometers away from the nearest village or technological assistance that can transform water unfit for consumption into clean water through peat water filtration and desalination.

The aid has benefited 11,306 families and is in line with the government’s target to achieve access to adequate sanitation, adequate drinking water and safe drinking water for 90 percent, 100 percent, and 15 percent of Indonesian households, respectively, by 2024 as outlined in the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN).

Pertamina VP of corporate communications Fadjar Djoko Santoso said Pertamina continued to strive to improve access to clean water, as well as achieving an Indonesian public that is more empowered economically, educationally, environmentally and in terms of health by increasing their access to clean water.

“In determining clean water access programs, we conduct social mapping at the beginning [of the process] to understand various aspects and geographical conditions related to the environment, economy, society and community relationships in a location. Then, [those aspects and geographic conditions] are mapped out technically for the need for clean water facilities,” Fadjar explained.

On Sep. 22 of this year, Pertamina established clean water facilities in Ende regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) within two locations: Tendambepa village, Nangapanda district, and Wolosoko village, Wolowaru district. Both are within the operational area of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Regional Jatimbalinus.

Pertamina provided these clean water facilities by building reservoir tanks and a piping system to transport water from its source, which is located more than 7 kilometers away from the reservoir tanks, into the tanks.

Fransiskus Mari Lado, a resident of Tendambepa village, expressed his gratitude for the assistance.

“We are very grateful for Pertamina’s clean water provision program because it has helped us significantly and eased our access to clean water. [This program] also marks the end of the difficult times we experienced in previous years,” he said.

Ende Regent Djafar H. Achmad also expressed his gratitude to Pertamina for the implementation of its CSER program. He encouraged the residents to play their role in sustaining the facilities by applying the knowledge they had gained from the training provided by Pertamina.

Furthermore, Fadjar explained that the clean water access improvement program aligned with environment, social and governance (ESG) principles for achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) number six on clean water, which meant that it could be optimized to improve Ende denizens’ health and access to clean water, while also guaranteeing the sustainable availability and management of water for everyone there.
