CAMBODIA: ASEAN wishes Cambodians a happy Water Festival

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has extended best wishes to the Cambodian people on the occasion of their traditional Water Festival.

“We wish our Cambodian friend a happy Bon Om Touk! The 3-day water festival ushers in the fishing season and pays homage to the remarkable ‘Reversal of the Tonle Sap River’ – a unique natural phenomenon essential to nurture local biodiversity,” the ASEAN said.

The festival usually celebrated with splendid regatta boat races, illuminated floats, concerts and fireworks, it added.

This year, the Water Festival will take place on Nov. 26-28. The three-day celebration is one of the most joyful events in Cambodia. People throughout the country flock into Phnom Penh capital to enjoy the festival’s three main events: boat racing, Loy Pratip (the display of decorative lighted boats), Sampeas Preah Khe (Moon Festival) and Ok Ambok (a type of glutinous rice roasted and crushed with pestle eaten with banana or coconut juice).

LAOS: PM voices support for ending violence against women

.

Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone has delivered a speech to mark International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25, which this year takes the theme “Unite! Invest to Prevent and Respond to Violence against Women and Girls”.

People in Laos and many other countries mark this day, when governments reaffirm their commitment to preventing and responding to violence against women and girls.

Around the world, women are experiencing increasing violence, in various environments.

.

The physical and mental abuse of women has both economic and social consequences, for individuals, families and communities, as well as hindering the achievement of sustainable development goals.

The PM Sonexay said eradication of violence can be successful only through the prevention of the use of violence, especially the coordination of many parties, the commitment of leadership in promoting such work, the implementation of laws and policies that promote gender equality, investing in women’s organisations, allocating resources to prevent and respond to discrimination in many forms that women are facing every day, empowering women and girls in all areas of society, ensuring services to help survivors of violence; create a safe environment for women and girls, reduce poverty by starting with women’s economic empowerment or the family economy

BANGKOK (AP) — An alliance of armed ethnic minority groups that launched a surprise offensive last month against Myanmar’s military has seized a major trading gate on the country’s northeastern border with China, a spokesperson for one of the groups said Sunday.

Le Kyar Win, the spokesperson of the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army, told The Associated Press that the Kyin-San-Kyawt border gate, one of the five major trading gates in Muse township along the Myanmar-China border in northern Shan state, was seized on Saturday by the alliance forces.

Muse hosts the 105-Mile Trade Zone and has the greatest volume of trade with China. It is the fourth border crossing seized by the alliance forces in a month of intense fighting.

“We attacked the places controlled by the junta as our military targets,” Le Kyar Win said.

Social media sites associated with the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army displayed photos and video of what they said were its forces at the border gate. The claims couldn’t immediately be verified.

SINGAPORE – There has been a noticeable increase in anti-Singapore sentiments on social media from around the region since the Oct 7 attack by Hamas in Israel and the retaliatory military action by Israel in Gaza.

Home Affairs and Law Minister K. Shanmugam said on Nov 27 that the comments have come from those who see Singapore as being pro-West or pro-Israel.

“Some have said that Singapore is Tanah Melayu, on Malay Lands – as a parallel, they say, to Israel being on Palestinian land. There have also been calls online for Singapore to be targeted using ‘rockets’ and ‘bombs’,” said Mr Shanmugam, who was speaking at a National Day Awards event to recognise Home Team officers.

THAILAND:  …Thailand to lower 2023 growth forecast after weak third quarter

CNA – Thailand’s previous 2023 economic growth forecast of 2.7 per cent will be lowered after a weaker-than-expected third quarter, Deputy Finance Minister Krisada Chinavicharana said yesterday.

Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy expanded much slower than expected, at 1.5 per cent, in the July-September quarter from a year earlier, the slowest this year, due to declining exports and government spending.
