BRUSSELS – Belgian police have found stolen Picasso and Chagall paintings in a basement in the city of Antwerp, local authorities said on Tuesday, adding that the artworks are still in good condition.
The paintings, Picasso’s “Tête” and Chagall’s “L’homme en prière”, were stolen from an art collector in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 2010 and are worth US$900,000 (S$1.2 million).
At the time of the theft, US$680,000 worth of jewellery was stolen as well but only the paintings have been found.
Local police had started an investigation when a source informed them that a Belgian national was offering both artworks for sale.
The local prosecutor said the main suspect has been arrested. REUTERS

Historical Description
Pablo Picasso Tête de Femme (Head of a Woman), 1962 is a stunning portrait of Jacqueline Roque captured in a cubist style. Jacqueline Roque is Picasso’s second wife and his most prolific muse across his oeuvre. Identified by her long black hair and piercing eyes, Picasso depicts his subject in multiple perspectives in an explicitly cubist fashion. In a close-up view, Picasso frame’s the image so that we see just her head and neck. At first glance, a full-face portrait gazes directly straight-forward. However, upon a closer look, the extreme side profiles of two women who stare at each other, nose to nose emerge. This striking linocut is executed in bold and fiery palette of black and vibrant yellow and orange. Showcasing the artist’s mastery of line, Picasso switches between using negative and positive space to define the composition. By allowing the pale paper beneath, the artist creates an implied white line which traces the highlights of Jacqueline’s hair and eyelashes, and highlights the structure of her face.
Created in 1962, this color linocut on Arches paper is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right, and numbered edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left; published by Louise Leiris, Paris and printed by Arnéra, Vallauris.
