CAMBODIA: Rental car businesses on a slow drive to normalcy
Rental car businesses across Phnom Penh are slowly getting back on track after the pandemic debacle, which almost crushed the industry.
According to insiders, the tourism resurge during the last year has contributed to a substantial increase in rental car businesses although the ‘back on track’ drive remains a little slower. The Kingdom attracted more than 5.43 million international tourists last year, a sharp increase of 139.5 percent from 2.27 million in 2022.
Speaking to Khmer Times, Jason Wong, who has huge investments in the rental car business, said the sector is resurgent after three long difficult years. “Before the pandemic started, we were having a tremendous business.
“The numbers and demand were so high that hardly we could meet them. There were travellers and businessmen from across the world, especially from China and Vietnam, who would easily rent luxury cars for $4,000 or $5,000 a month.
A representative of a car rental agency told Khmer Times that most of the customers prefer Toyota, Ford and Honda vehicles. “There is definitely a preference for SUVs from the part of customers.

MYANMAR: Myanmar minority fighters seize port town
YANGON – Fighters from a Myanmar ethnic minority armed group have seized control of a port town after more than two months of intense clashes with junta troops, they said.
The Arakan Army (AA) said late Wednesday it “completely controlled” Pauktaw, a town of 20,000 people close to a crucial deep-water port in the capital of western Rakhine state.
AA fighters briefly seized Pauktaw in November, shattering a fragile ceasefire that had largely held since the military’s coup in 2021.
The junta has used artillery and naval ships to bombard the town almost daily since, and strafed it with gunfire from helicopters, residents have told AFP.

SINGAPORE: More teens sexually exploited by online predators, many cases unreported: Lawyers and counsellors
SINGAPORE – Ostracised and bullied in school, 11-year-old Jane (not her real name) sought refuge in an online karaoke app where she posted videos of herself singing the latest tunes.
She felt validated by the praise she received and was happy she could make friends.
Things took a sinister turn in 2021, when some of the people she was chatting with on the app made lewd comments about her body and asked her to send nude pictures of herself.
.
Eager to please them, the Primary 5 pupil complied and even met them in places like public carparks.
Some were men in their 30s, who molested her.
Jane’s mother found out what had happened only when she saw a nude photo of her daughter that had been leaked on social media, and made a police report. Jane’s case was subsequently referred to the Ministry of Social and Family Development’s Child Protective Service.
