HEADLINES-ASEANEWS | CAMBODIA: Amnesty International’s report proved wrong
.
An advisor to the Royal Government of Cambodia has proved the report by Amnesty International on Cambodia’s resettlement of the squatters from the Angkor Archaeological Park was baseless and misleading.
The advisor, Raoul Marc Jennar, ran reporters and other participants through the detailed flaws, which he said were ill-willed and discriminatory, in a press conference with Minister of Information Neth Pheaktra on April 5 at the ministry.
As part of long-term sustainable development, the Royal Government of Cambodia arranged a decent resettlement plan for the settlers from the Angkor Archaeological Park of Siem Reap province.
It follows carefully designed stages to mitigate the social and environmental impacts on the affected residents, offering them new resettlement with the necessary infrastructure and other facilities in the nearby Run Taek and Peak Sneng areas.
To deep dismay, Amnesty International once again issued a report that did not reflect the endeavour and reality and politicised the issue.
Raoul Marc Jennar, who closely monitors the resettlement, sees the need to reveal the facts to defend the hard work of the government for the sake of the Cambodian people.
Neth Pheaktra echoed the insight, adding that the public has the right to access the truth, which is a priority of the Royal Government as well as the ministry to bridge the information gap and tackle fake reports.
The press conference was held to launch a new book titled “Resettlement of the Squatters from Angkor Park,” written by Raoul Marc Jennar, who is also a lecturer at the National Institute of Diplomacy and International Relations (NIDIR). AKP

OPINION:
Angkor Park : Amnesty International lies and deceives international public opinion
Amnesty International, regarding the rehousing of squatters illegally occupying the protected area of the Angkor Temple Park, published a report in which the Cambodian Government was violently accused, in the most outrageous terms, of carrying out “mass forced evictions” which had “cruelly uprooted families who had lived in Angkor for several generations.”

MYANMAR: Thousands flee as KIA, allies capture junta camps near Momauk
The southern Kachin State town of roughly 11,000 inhabitants has also sheltered thousands of war-displaced villagers in recent years
,
The fall of two regime army camps near the southern Kachin State town of Momauk earlier this week has sent thousands of people living there fleeing for safety, according to residents.
Col. Naw Bu, the spokesperson for the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), said the group and its allies captured the junta’s Kyauksakhan camp, located about two miles east of the town, on Tuesday, and the nearby Mai Sak Kawng camp the following day.
The latest advances by the anti-regime forces have raised fears of an escalation of the conflict in and around the town of roughly 11,000 inhabitants, said one man.
“The fighting is getting very close to our town, so people are fleeing to escape the war,” he said, adding that some residents are heading west towards Bhamo, while others are going north to state capital Myitkyina.
“About half the town left a day ago, but. . .

THAILAND: Thailand leads push for six-nation visa to lure moneyed tourists
BANGKOK – Thailand is steering an initiative for a joint visa programme with five other countries that together hosted about 70 million tourists in 2023, as Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin ramps up initiatives to attract more long-haul and high-spending travellers.
Mr Srettha – who has pledged to elevate Thailand’s status as a tourism hotspot into an aviation and logistics hub – has discussed the Schengen-type visa idea with his counterparts in Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam in recent months. The facility is meant to ensure seamless mobility for travellers among the six neighbouring countries.
The Schengen visa allows free travel around the border-free zone within Europe.
