Chenda Sophea, who is also a Deputy Prime Minister, said in a statement yesterday that “Cambodia is strongly committed to promoting and protecting human rights, as well as enhancing the international cooperation on human rights through the ratification and adoption of the eight International Conventions of the nine International Conventions related to Human Rights.”

“The Royal Government of Cambodia always attaches great importance to civic and political space and the social-economic rights of Cambodian people,” he said.

The remarks were made after Chenda Sophea received a courtesy call from Roueida El Hage, the Country Representative of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Cambodia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday.

The meeting focused on the key areas of cooperation between the government and OHCHR, including activities, roles and the previous achievements of OHCHR in the country.

The statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the two sides expressed appreciation for more than three decades of cooperation between the government and OHCHR in Cambodia, which underscores the latter’s stance on good cooperation with United Nations mechanisms.

Chenda Sophea said that Cambodia looks forward to working closely with the OHCHR and extending cooperation with the organisation towards achieving its goal in the areas of human rights and democracy for Cambodia based on the principles of equality, sovereignty of state and non-interference in the internal affairs of Cambodia.

El Hage expressed her deep gratitude for the close cooperation with the government and promised to continue providing technical assistance.

In February, the OHCHR announced the initiation of a new project cycle for the country programme 2024-2026, which is со-funded by the European Union. This initiative aims to bolster the promotion and protection of civic space, empower civil society stakeholders by deepening their understanding of international human rights laws, ensure inclusive participation in policy-making and legislative processes, and facilitate enhanced engagement with authorities.

In its ongoing commitment to advancing human rights, OHCHR Cambodia offers technical advice to national institutions based on human rights assessments, conducts capacity-building programmes for governmental and civil society actors.

It also collaborates closely with the United Nations Country Office and other partners to integrate human rights principles into efforts supporting sustainable peace and inclusive development in Cambodia.

Additionally, the Country Office continues to assist the Government in meeting its obligations under international human rights law.
