OPINION | Texting while driving needs to end

I would like to call on the authorities to clamp down on people who use their mobile phones while driving. I know it is illegal because a friend was recently fined BND300 when traffic police caught her in the act.
This is especially prevalent near a roundabout during rush hours. More and more roundabouts in Brunei have traffic lights, and as soon as these drivers see that the light is red, they would start fiddling with their phones. Often, they don’t even realise that the light has turned green and as a result, cause traffic congestion.
Everyone is hooked to their smartphones these days. Surely, there must be times when it is not just inappropriate to use the device but downright dangerous. I have seen way too many people texting while driving that it often makes me quite anxious to get off the road as soon as possible.
