The Ministry of Health has issued an advisory on the recent rise in cases of COVID-19 and influenza in Cambodia

The Ministry of Health says that it would like to inform the people that through the influenza surveillance system and the acute respiratory tract surveillance system in the Kingdom of Cambodia, there was an increase in influenza and COVID-19 during May and early June 2024, which coincides with the increase in these diseases in many countries in the Western Asia-Pacific region and our neighboring countries.

PCR tests to identify virus types and subgroups (Virus Sequencing) by the National Institutes of Public Health found the COVID-19 subgroup of mutations in the Variant of Interest (VOI) group.

But it is not the Variant of Concern (VOC) that will cause more hospital stays.

Therefore, the Ministry of Health calls on all citizens to take care of their personal and family health to prevent the spread of influenza and Covid-19 on a large scale.

MYANMAR: Anti-junta fighters seize three junta bases near Kachin State capital

While casualty figures for the fighting forces are still unknown, heavy artillery shelling over two days of clashes in Waingmaw Township resulted in at least two civilian deaths

Fighting is ongoing in Waingmaw Township, Kachin State after the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and its allies seized three junta bases on Tuesday, according to local sources and a KIA spokesperson.

The KIA-led alliance of forces initiated simultaneous assaults on the 13-Mile Gate camp, Bum Taung camp, and Sadung Junction camps near the Waingmaw-Sadung-Kan Paik Ti road at around 5am on Tuesday morning, according to the KIA’s spokesperson.

They succeeded in capturing all three bases within a few hours, but some exchanges of fire with junta forces have continued nearby, he added.

“Currently, we have control of three camps. We attacked them this morning. The fighting has continued around the captured camps,” KIA information officer Col. Bu told Myanmar Now on Tuesday afternoon.

THAILAND: Thai court to reconvene next week on PM

BANGKOK (AFP) – Thailand’s Constitutional Court will reconvene next week on two cases that could plunge the kingdom into turmoil – one targeting the prime minister, and one the largest opposition party.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin could be thrown out of office if he loses his ethics case over the appointment of a Cabinet minister with a criminal conviction.

The Move Forward Party (MFP), which won most seats at last year’s general election but was blocked from forming the government, could be dissolved over its campaign pledge to reform Thailand’s tough royal insult laws.

The court said yesterday it had “ordered relevant parties to identify witnesses and evidence” in Srettha’s case, and told the election commission to submit more witness accounts in its petition against the MFP.

The court will meet for further deliberations next Tuesday – the same day former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra will formally face charges of insulting the monarchy.

MFP leader Pita Limjaroenrat has said he is confident the party will win its case, warning that a dissolution order would be an “attack on democracy”.

But the Constitutional Court has dismissed prime ministers and wound up political parties in the past, most recently MFP’s forerunner the Future Forward Party, over financial issues in 2020.

That dissolution was the catalyst for mass youth-led street demonstrations that shook Bangkok for months and helped MFP to its poll success last year.

SINGAPORE: S’pore Chinese culture unique because it is established on foundations of multiculturalism: SM Lee

Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong stressed that in Singapore, all citizens should put the Republic and its interests first. PHOTO: LIANHE ZAOBAO

SINGAPORE – Having a culture that is established on the foundations of multiculturalism, with people accepting, respecting and constantly interacting with those from other races and cultures, is a unique and precious feature of the Singaporean Chinese identity, said Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong on June 12.

Speaking in Mandarin at a dinner organised by the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) and Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations (SFCCA), SM Lee noted that despite having a Chinese majority, Singapore did not choose to build its national culture completely around the Chinese culture.

Instead, it is the only country with a Chinese-majority population that nevertheless maintains a multicultural, multi-religious society where everyone is equal, he said.
