PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed lawyer Joel Anthony Viado as the officer in charge of the Bureau of Immigration (BI), Malacañang confirmed Tuesday.

Viado, deputy commissioner of the BI, took over the post of former immigration chief Norman Tansingco, who was fired by President Marcos Jr. following the escape of dismissed Bamban, Tarlac mayor Alice Guo.

Before his appointment to the BI, Viado was the partner of a law firm, in charge of its overall administration and operation.

He began his career in law as a legal counsel for multinational corporations engaged in construction operations all over Asia, Europe, and the United States.

Viado also served in the presidential management staff in Malacañang during the term of then-president Joseph Estrada.

He gained extensive experience both in the public and private sectors, having also served under the Congress of the Philippines.

Viado holds a degree in political science from the University of the Philippines and graduated law from the same university. He entered the Philippine Bar in 1999.

Senate President Francis Escudero commended President Marcos for relieving Tansingco, saying he acted “decisively and with dispatch” on his statement that heads would roll.

“I do not believe Alice’s assertion that no other Filipino helped her, for I am of the belief that there were other personalities, possibly officials in the government other than the BI, who helped her,” Escudero said in a text message.

On the recommendation of Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla, President Marcos relieved Tansingco, whom Remulla said failed to promptly inform the Justice Department that Guo had already left the Philippines.

The President has vowed to uncover those responsible for assisting the departure of Guo, who is accused of falsely claiming Filipino citizenship and having ties to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs).

“The departure of Alice Guo has laid bare the corruption that undermines our justice system and erodes public trust. Let me be clear: Heads will roll,” Marcos said on his social media page.

“We will expose the culprits who have betrayed the people’s trust and aided in her flight. A full-scale investigation is already underway, and those responsible will be suspended and will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” the Chief Executive added.
