Javier Gayoso, 27, a Philippine striker for Phnom Penh Crown FC has been displaying outstanding performance at the early start of the CPL season 2024-2025, with seven goals for the club so far and is one of the top five league’s goal scorers.

Gayoso, a striker on the Philippine national football team, joined the eight-time CPL Champions Crown before the season began. The 27-year-old striker has made eight appearances and has consistently been an important part of the club. He has seven goals, two of which came in Crown’s 5-1 victory over the Ministry of Interior’s Football Association (MIF) in week nine of the CPL regular season on Wednesday.

With assistance from an outstanding striker like Gayoso, Crown now rank first in the table standing with 24 points and are the only team that have yet to drop a game so far.

“As a player, I try my best to listen to everyone on the team and do my best for everyone. My experience so far has been amazing and I am excited to do more for the club with every game. What motivates me the most is the trust my teammates and coaches have in me. Before signing with Phnom Penh Crown I promised myself that if a club abroad was willing to give me a chance I would make sure it was the best decision they make and knowing that everyone in the club believes in me pushes me to give my all for them,” Gayoso told Khmer Times in an exclusive interview on Thursday.

“I feel that with any player there will always be an adjustment, especially for a foreign-based player. In my case, I did have to adjust as fast as possible given that I came in closer to the beginning of the CPL season than other foreigners,” he added.

Gayoso told Khmer Times that it was a chance he had while still playing football in the Philippines and that he had always wanted to play abroad.

Crown is a significant club in Southeast Asia, and he views it as an excellent opportunity for him to gain experience and improve his talents outside of his comfort zone.

Crown fans are pleased to have players like Gayoso on their side because they feel he will be a crucial player in helping Crown reclaim their dominance in the CPL championships. Fans noted that he is one of the players who can rapidly adjust to the team’s playing style, and his finishing ability is also impressive.

The Philippine striker is now regarded as one of the top-notch ASEAN players in the CPL, and Cambodian football supporters hope that all teams in the league can sign other top-tier players from ASEAN countries. They believe that doing so will improve the competition’s qualification and make the league more appealing to Cambodian football supporters and those watching from abroad.
