Baste Duterte: Cornered animals become aggressive

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Vice President Sara Duterte withheld comment, but her brothers yesterday issued warnings directed at President Marcos and Speaker Martin Romualdez after Congress voted to impeach her.

“Cornered animals become aggressive Martin Romualdez, Bongbong Marcos,” Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte said in a post on Threads yesterday.

Davao City First District Rep. Paolo Duterte said he was “appalled and enraged” by the “desperate” attempt of his colleagues in the House of Representatives to railroad the impeachment of his sister, the Vice President.

“The sinister maneuvering of certain lawmakers, led by Rep. (Janette) Garin, to hastily collect signatures and push for the immediate approval and transmittal of this baseless impeachment case is a clear act of political persecution,” Rep. Duterte said.

Congress yesterday transmitted to the Senate three impeachment complaints against the Vice President just before Congress goes on recess prior to the campaign period leading to the May 12 midterm polls.

“This administration is treading on dangerous ground. If they were unfazed by the over one million rallying supporters of the Iglesia ni Cristo, then they are blindly marching toward an even greater storm – one that could shake the very foundation of their rule,” Pulong said.

“The Filipino people will not sit idly by as this government undermines democracy and silences opposition through fabricated accusations,” he added.

“If the Marcos administration thinks it can push this sham impeachment without consequence, they are gravely mistaken. This is not just about VP Sara Duterte – this is about the will of the Filipino people,” he said.

Congressman Duterte also pointed out that “the growing discontent and frustration across the country will not be contained for long. Mark my words: this reckless abuse of power will not end in their favor.”

Sara waiting for copy of complaint

The Vice President herself opted to withhold comment, saying she would wait to receive a copy of the

Articles of Impeachment. She told TV 5 yesterday that she wanted to issue a precise reaction to the accusations against her. Removal by impeachment would permanently disqualify her from holding public office. She recently said she was seriously considering seeking the presidency in 2028.

Fake news

For her part, Iloilo Rep. Garin on Wednesday denied that she was among those who led the gathering of signatures that led to the impeachment of Vice President Duterte.

Speaking on “Storycon” on One News, Garin called out Rep. Duterte over what she described as “fake news.”

“I’m not bothered by the accusation because it’s fake news. I am much more bothered by the way Congressman Duterte is vetting the information that goes through their office,” she said.

“More than 100 congressmen were there in the consultation. I was not even one of those who stood up,” she said, referring to the caucus of House members where the impeachment complaint was discussed.

Garin confirmed that she was among those who signed the complaint, saying it is her “constitutional duty to act on it.”

But she maintained that she did not lead the efforts as alleged by the Davao lawmaker.

During their caucus, she said it was House leaders like Majority Leader Mannix Dalipe (Zamboanga City) and Deputy Speaker Jay-jay Suarez (Quezon) who spoke about the matter.

Speaker Romualdez was not actively involved, she said, noting that he arrived late for the caucus.

“The Speaker came halfway, and he was listening to what other members of Congress are saying,” she said.

Presidential son and Ilocos Norte Rep. Sandro Marcos, a senior deputy majority leader, was present in the meeting, Garin said.

Imee to fight until the end’

Meanwhile, Sen. Imee Marcos yesterday vowed to “fight until the end” the impeachment complaint against Vice President Duterte, which was transmitted by the House of Representatives to the Senate.

“I will fight it to the end,” Marcos said in Filipino.

Despite the strained relationship between Vice President Duterte and President Marcos, the senator – the President’s elder sister – has remained steadfast in her support for Duterte, consistently standing by her side.

Even as the impeachment complaints against the Vice President have been transmitted to the Senate, senators continued the plenary session yesterday, the last day before going on recess to give way for the May 2025 midterm elections.

Senate President Francis Escudero was presiding over the session that tackled several proposed measures. The senators adjourned at 6:56 p.m. but there was no mention of the impeachment complaints against Duterte.

Congress is set to go on break on Feb. 7 but yesterday was the Senate’s last session as both chambers hold sessions only from Monday to Wednesday.

Last month, Escudero called his senator colleagues to “refrain from making any public comments or statements regarding the allegations in the complaint’s articles of impeachment. Should the Senate be called upon to act as an impeachment court, any perception of bias or pre-judgment would undermine not only the integrity of the impeachment trial but also the public’s trust in the Senate as an institution.”

Escudero said that while impeachment is often described as a political exercise, “it is crucial that members of the Senate approach it with the impartiality and objectivity demanded of us.”

OVP usec back to work

Meanwhile, Undersecretary Zuleika Lopez has gone back to work at the Office of the Vice President (OVP) months after the tumultuous political storm the office faced before Congress.

Lopez was photographed alongside Vice President Duterte and other OVP officials on Monday during the flag-raising ceremony at their Central Office in Mandaluyong City.

This was the first public appearance of the undersecretary since the political storm the OVP and Duterte faced last year – at the center of which are Lopez and other OVP officials who were hospitalized due to what they claim was political harassment by lawmakers. – Diana Lhyd Suelto, Neil Jayson Servallos, Evelyn Macairan, Janvic Mateo, Cecille Suerte Felipe
