ANN/PHILIPPINE DAILY INQUIRER – The Philippines has strengthened its foothold in the international market with its inaugural shipment of frozen durian to China, valued at PHP8.2 million, marking a significant milestone for the country’s agricultural exports.

In a statement, the Department of Agriculture (DA) announced that Maylong Enterprises Corp, a Davao City-based company, delivered 1,050 boxes of frozen durian meat and 300 boxes of durian paste to Nansha District in Guangzhou. This makes Maylong Enterprises the first Philippine enterprise to secure approval from the General Administration of Customs of China to supply frozen durian products to the country.

CHINA’S GROWING APPETITE FOR DURIAN

According to a report from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, China is the primary driver of global durian demand, consuming more than 90 per cent of the world’s durian supply.

The DA hailed the shipment as a “key moment” for the agriculture sector, emphasising its potential to boost export opportunities. “This historic shipment strengthens the Philippines’ presence in international markets, opening the door to future growth and solidifying the country’s reputation as a leading producer of world-class durian,” the DA said in its statement.

DAVAO REGION: THE HEART OF PHILIPPINE DURIAN PRODUCTION

The Davao Region continues to be the top durian producer in the Philippines, accounting for more than two-thirds of the country’s total production, according to the latest government data. “From the fertile soils of Davao to China’s bustling markets, our frozen durian represents the hopes and dreams of countless farmers,” said DA Region XI executive director Macario Gonzaga.

With this successful export, the Philippines is poised to further tap into China’s growing demand for durian, paving the way for expanded trade opportunities and greater agricultural development.
