Former President Rodrigo Duterte attends the Senate hearing into his war on drugs campaign on October 28, 2024.

MANILA, Philippines — A week since his arrest and detention under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands, former president Rodrigo Duterte is now leaving his fate up to God, whom he previously called “stupid.”
“So be it. He was referring to his fate,” Vice President Sara Duterte told reporters and supporters after visiting her father in detention.
The younger Duterte said that while he is in good spirits, the former president told her that the situation in the country will get “worse and worse” due to “fractured governance.”
While still firm that state authorities kidnapped her father, the Vice President said there is no recourse now but to move forward and submit to the ICC legal proceedings.
.
Asked if their family is now resigned to the possibility of the Duterte patriarch not returning home in the near future, the Vice President said: “Maybe best if you ask Atty. Kaufman. That’s life.”
The Vice President was referring to British-Israeli Nicholas Kaufman, who will serve as her father’s lead defense counsel in his case of crimes against humanity.
Meanwhile, the older Duterte’s former wife, Elizabeth Zimmerman, Sara’s mother, is set to arrive at The Hague next week in time for hi’s 80th birthday on March 28.
“She (Zimmerman) said that even if she will not be allowed inside the detention facility, she will go here to show her moral support amid what the former president is going through,” Sara said.
.
The Vice President said her father’s common-law partner Honeylet Avanceña and daughter Veronica are also set to arrive at The Hague next week, though she was not privy to the exact date.
The Vice President said she has yet to talk to her brother, Davao Rep. Paolo Duterte, on whether the latter could come to The Hague for their father’s birthday celebration.
Their youngest brother, Davao City Mayor Sebastian, already told her that he cannot come due to campaign rally schedules.
The Vice President is set to meet their family’s supporters at The Hague on March 23 for an advance birthday celebration for her father.
Asked for her birthday wish for her detained father, the Vice President listed three things.
“Comfort, good health and happiness. I think he doesn’t mind that he is inside the detention facility because he knows that it is part of his promise to face any charges against him,” she said.
