MANILA, Philippines — Alex Eala is projected to reach a new high in the tennis world, regardless of her final placing in the WTA250 Sao Paulo Open in Brazil.

Eala is now No. 55 in the WTA live rankings for a new all-time best barring any major movements from other players.

She accumulated 29 more points in the first two rounds to rack up her tour points to 1083 and improve from No. 61 before the Brazilian tourney.

Her previous high was at No. 56 after a runner-up finish in the WTA250 Eastbourne Open in England.

MANILA, Philippines — All good things, eventually, come to an end.

For Alex Eala, it is her seven-match win streak and her run in the Sao Paulo Open.

Eala absorbed a stunning defeat in the quarterfinals of the Brazil tournament at the hands of Indonesia’s Janice Tjen, 4-6, 1-6, Saturday morning (Manila time).

The Filipina, who rose to a new career-high ranking of 55th in the world, started off the match waxing hot but seemingly lost steam to bow out of the competition against her fellow Southeast Asian tennister, who is rated 124th in the live rankings.

Eala bagged the first three games of the match, going up 3-0.

But the 23-year-old Tjen seemingly flipped the switch, controlling the match and winning 11 of the next 13 games to grab the first set, 6-4, then raced to a 5-1 lead in the second.

And with Eala serving, Tjen would not be denied as she finished it off with a booming return winner.

The Indonesian standout recorded two aces in the match. While she had more double faults, she punched in 23 winners against Eala’s four.

.

Eala’s win streak started in Mexico, defeating Arianne Hartono, Varvara Lepchenko, Nicole Fossa Huergo, Kayla Day and Panna Udvardy to bag her first-ever WTA title.

In Sao Paulo, the Rafa Nadal Academy graduate beat Yasmine Mansouri and Julia Riera in the first two rounds.

Tjen, for her part, will now face off against either Solana Sierra or Francesca Jones in the semifinals.
