ILOILO CITY — The Philippine National Police will deploy 1,500 personnel to ensure the safety and security of delegates attending the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) meeting on Dec. 10-13 in Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan.
The four-day gathering is one of several Asean events to be hosted across the country, alongside Manila, Cebu, Bohol, Laoag, Iloilo, Tagaytay, and Clark.
Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) director BGen. Josefino Ligan said on Monday that the island is expected to receive around 200 delegates from various Asean member states.
“The security coverage has been in place. We will begin deploying on Dec. 7. We will also set up a multi-agency coordinated center at the Aklan Provincial Police Office,” he said.
Of the total personnel, more than 500 are augmentation forces from provincial police offices across Western Visayas. Teams will be assigned both on the island and in Caticlan.
“Boracay Island is isolated, so it is easier to secure with the help of the Philippine Coast Guard and our maritime units. They will handle shoreline security,” he added.
He also said that no part of the island will be placed under restricted access despite the high-level meeting.
On Nov. 26, PRO-6 joined the Department of the Interior and Local Government Region 6 in the Inter-Agency Coordinating Conference for the Asean Senior Economic Officials Meeting Retreat 2026.

Aklan PPO chief PIO Cpt. Aubrey Ayon said in an interview on Monday that preparations have reached 100 percent as the province gears up to host the high-level international gathering.
Ayon said a send-off ceremony for the deployment is scheduled on Dec. 7.
With the 2026 theme “Navigating Our Future, Together” and the Philippines holding the chairmanship, Asean will underscore three priorities: peace and security anchors, prosperity corridors, and people empowerment.
