Hundreds of millions of people are still expected to hit the road and travel homebound on Wednesday and Thursday ahead of Nyepi and Idul Fitri, with the latter expected to fall on Friday or Saturday, depending on the moon sighting.

W ith millions of travelers leaving Jakarta ahead of Nyepi (the Balinese Hindu Day of Silence) and the Idul Fitri holiday, the government is ramping up preparedness at major transportation hubs to anticipate the surge of holidaymakers hitting the road.

The second peak of mudik (exodus) is expected to occur on Wednesday or Thursday as authorities saw an increase in the number of homebound travelers from the capital city.

Nyepi falls on Thursday, while Idul Fitri is expected to fall on Friday or Saturday, depending on the moon sighting.

As of Tuesday, around 28 percent of the 3.5 million vehicles from Jakarta projected to travel during the holiday season had left the capital toward other regions, according to National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas) chief Insp. Gen. Agus Suryonugroho.

“We are now managing more or less the other 72 percent,” Agus said in a statement on Tuesday.

Despite the increase, Agus reassured that traffic remained under control, as the police had prepared measures as part of its security operation called Operation Ketupat to anticipate traffic, including enforcing one-way and counterflow traffic systems.

The Transportation Ministry previously predicted a total of 144 million travelers would hit the road during this holiday season.

Around 20 million of them will depart from Jakarta, the second highest figure after West Java’s 32 million.
