MANILA, Philippines — What disadvantage?
The Philippine Paralympic Team stunned chess fans when they won their two inaugural matches on opening night of the PCAP-SMC-Ayala Land Premier Cup, 14-7 over the Davao Executive Chess Wizards, and 12.5-8.5 over the Bangkok Double Bishop.
The para team got off to a good start in blitz play as they stunned Davao, 6-1.
The Executive Chess Wizards came roaring back in rapid play, but the para team’s Jerlyn San Diego typified their stand when from a slightly inferior position, she held off Ella Moulic’s attack with solid defense.
San Diego also exhibited patience while waiting for her Davao counterpart to make a mistake. That came in move #39 when Moulic’s bishop was knocked off the board by San Diego.

The para team also received a stroke of good luck when NM Japser Rom was under assault from AGM Lyndon Sambilon who simply ran out of time in what would have been a crucial win for Davao.
The para team took rapid play, 8-6, for a 14-7 overall result.
In their second match of the PCAP double header, the para team took on foreign guest team Bangkok Double Bishop.
Once more the para team got off to a good start in blitz play, 5.5-1.5, but it was that huge win by NM Arman Subaste over Thailand’s FM Thanadon Kulpruethanon, that helped propel the former’s side to a win.
As it was in the first game of the night for the para team, their opponent came alive in rapid play.
The para team’s FM Roel Abelgas mounted a strong attack on Board 7 led to a huge materials advantage against CM Prin Laohawirapap. Abelgas’ teammate Joselito Cada was also to checkmate Bangkok’s Peter Darby in 47 moves that led to the crucial 7-7 draw.
The Philippine Para Team parlayed that into a 12.5-8.5 win overall for a remarkable debut in the third and final conference of PCAP’s maiden season.
“We got lucky but we also worked our way for the wins,” summed up the home team’s FM Sander Severino.
Today, Saturday, October 9, the Philippine Paralympics Chess Team will take on China’s Peng Cheng squad in the first game of the double header. In the night camp, they battle with Olongapo.
