Teachers and students in Bounneua district, Phongsaly province, will soon have a new secondary school to replace the old building they currently use, to improve basic education and support human resource development.

The Vietnamese government has granted VNĐ120 billion (more than 49 billion kip) for the construction of the new Bounneua Secondary School to mark the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations and 40th anniversary of the signing of the Laos-Vietnam Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation.

Two three-storey buildings containing 40 classrooms will be built, with each room being fully furnished.

There will also be a teachers’ office, a school club and a stadium. The school’s more than 1,700 students will benefit by having a larger and improved learning environment.

Construction is scheduled to start in March 2018 and is expected to take one year.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility took place recently in Bounneua district.

According to project officials, the objective is to provide a good quality building to ensure that learning and teaching are improved to meet international standards.

The modern building will greatly enhance the teaching and learning environment in the hope that students will be better qualified and more able to contribute to the country’s development.

Construction of the school is a gift from the Vietnamese government to further strengthen friendship and cooperation between the neighbouring countries.

The Vietnamese government has not only provided a grant for Phongsaly province but has also granted VNĐ30 billion to build a new secondary school in Pakxan district, Borikhamxay province.

In addition, Vietnam granted VNĐ44 billion to build the Laos-Vietnam Friendship Secondary School in Savannakhet province, and supported the Vietnamese language programme at Champassak University in Champassak province.

According to the Lao Ministry of Education and Sports, education and training cooperation between Laos and Vietnam has also expanded. This year, the Vietnamese government has provided 1,000 scholarships for Lao students and officials to study in Vietnam, while the Lao government has provided 60 scholarships to Vietnamese students and officials to study in Laos.

These scholarships will support students in various fields, with bachelor degrees, higher level courses and short term-training courses being provided.

More than 14,000 Lao students and officials are studying in Vietnam, funded by the state and private sectors, NGOs and exchange scholarships.
