OP-ED:  LTO needs to move its driving seminars online

2.18.22

Those that frequently drive from home to work or school know that the country’s roads are not exactly the safest places to drive on. This is proven by annual road accident statistics over the past couple of years. There’s no shortage of video proof either on social media.

The seminar can be chopped into shorter videos that an applicant has to click on and watch to the end manually. Another option is daily Zoom or Google Meets seminars. This way, and by requiring cameras to be on, the LTO can verify that applicants are indeed paying attention.

These are just some of the ways the requirement can be met without the risk of spreading the virus. All it takes is a little resourcefulness.

COMMENT:

The problem with the government agencies is they prefer to have income out of these seminars than help people get assistance for them to get decent jobs and livelihood especially those who are not educated enough to land into a higher level working statues .

EDITORIAL – Voting for their future

February 18, 2022
Young and first-time voters represent a decisive force in the May 2022 elections, according to the latest figures released by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

<>

As the nation seeks the yet undiscerned light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, the 2022 elections may provide the best means to electing leaders who can help us grope our way out of this crisis. In this pivotal democratic exercise, the Filipino youth—who represent more than half of the crucial votes—must rise to the people’s expectations. They must actively educate themselves on the candidates’ worth by seeking out more reliable alternatives to social media as sources of news. There are also the televised debates, interviews, and fora that dive deeper into the candidates’ platform, background, character, and values, which they can monitor and take note of. They can monitor as well how the Comelec is doing its job and call attention to its lapses in maintaining the fairness and integrity of the coming elections.

This is a decisive and historic moment for the Filipino youth. It is both a privilege and responsibility for them to seize this opportunity to steer our nation—and their future—toward hope and renewal.

EDITORIAL – Declining economic freedom

EDITORIAL - Declining economic freedom

Since 2017, the Philippines has been slipping in the global Index of Economic Freedom. The slide continued in the latest index, with the country falling to 80th place out of 177 economies, from 73rd out of 178 in the previous year. This brings the country to the bottom ranks of the “moderately free” economies.

The weaknesses cited in the index show the challenges that the next administration will face. Recovery from the pandemic, both in terms of public health and the economy, can be daunting. This makes voters’ choices in the upcoming elections critical. The country must disprove many analysts’ projections that it will be the regional laggard in pandemic recovery.

Failure of DU30’s men in the money matter is backfiring in the economy.
