HEADLINE: VIENTIANE, Laos- More than 1,000 Lao nationals find jobs in S. Korea
More than 1,000 Lao nationals will go to the Republic of Korea next month to take up employment, after passing competency tests administered by the Buasavanh Employment Service Company in Vientiane.
Korea is hiring workers under a Service Commitment Agreement through a points system agreed to by the Industries Sector and SMEs, an official from Laos’ Employment Service Centre at the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare said.
Job applicants can apply for work in Korea through the Buasavanh Employment Service Company, which accepts people who are in good health, aged 25-45, and have a genuine desire to work.

All expenses involved, such as the requisite documents, visa fees, a round-trip airfare and other expenses are the responsibility of those who are hired for jobs.
Under the agreement, about 500 people are selected each year for employment in Korea after passing a Korean language test administered by the Human Resources Development Service of Korea.
A representative of the Buasavanh Employment Service Company said young people interested in working in agriculture in Korea can also register with the company. They do not need to take a skill or language test, but must be in good health.

Many job seekers in Laos struggle to find work because they have not taken training courses and are unable to make progress. In general, skill levels are low and most young people are poorly educated.
Employment contracts in Korea run for five months to one year. Workers earn a minimum of US$1,600 to US$2,000 a month and are also eligible for social welfare benefits.
An official from the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, who asked not to be named, said Korea accepts young workers from various Asean countries including Laos, to work in small and medium enterprises in agriculture, the service sector, and other industries.
However, the number of people in Laos who are able to pass the Korean language test is small, even though it is relatively less competitive than in other countries that send workers to Korea.

Vietnam has 55,795 workers employed in Korea, the Philippines has 26,217, and Indonesia has 24,732.
Last year, as many as 500,712 Lao nationals were working overseas, including 27,176 women, official statistics show.
Most found jobs in Thailand, while just over 50 people were working in Japan, according to the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare.
