Construction has begun on the grandiose Giant Khaen Hotel in Thakhor village, Khong district, Champassak province, with the 63-storey hotel expected to be finished within three years, according to the Paxason newspaper.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the US$130 million hotel took place on Wednesday, chaired by Prime Minister Dr Sonexay Siphandone. The hotel is situated in the Sithandone Special Economic Zone in Khong district, and is being built on a 9,846-hectare site.
The Zone was granted an investment permit by the Lao government in 2018, for an investment value of US$1,330 million, and carries a 50-year concession.

When open, the hotel will be able to accommodate more than 2,000 people.The hotel complex covers an area of 366,923 square metres. The rice basket building will be 62 metres high and have 13 floors, while the 63-storey khaen-shaped block will rise to 248.98 metres in height.
This hotel will be a 5-star facility combining aspects of leisure and business, with meeting rooms, shops, entertainment, and a full range of international standard services.
The project will serve to create jobs and deliver other benefits for local people as well as be a huge boost to the area’s economy.
