KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian has been chosen as one of the winners of the most prestigious photography competition in the world – the Hasselblad Masters Awards 2018.

Nabil Rosman, from Kota Baru, was announced as one of 11 honourees of the bi-annual competition’s 11 diverse categories. He won in the “Project/21” section.

The achievement is no mean feat, as the 11 winners were picked from more than 31,500 entries from around the world.

Nabil will receive the title “Hasselblad Master” and be named a brand ambassador for Hasselblad for two years, in addition to receiving a new medium format camera at a special Photokina 2018 ceremony in Cologne, Germany this September.

Along with the other honourees, Nabil will also be invited to shoot for a collaborative project with Hasselblad, which will see the release of a “Hasselblad Masters” book.

Nabil will presumably have to draft an acceptance speech, in spite of being “a boy of few words” – his description of himself which appears in his Instagram profile.

This year’s competition was particularly fierce, as a record number of images were submitted, according to Hasselblad marketing manager Bronius Rudnickas.

As for the quality of the works, even Masters Jury member and professional photographer Tom Oldham said that he was struck by how progressive many of the entries were this year and “how far the entrants were willing to push the brief.”

“These were the photographers who caught my eye – the ballsy, out-there risk-takers who make compelling pictures that refuse to be ignored,” he said. — SAYS.COM
