Laos received 20 Asean Tourism Standard awards at a ceremony held in Vientiane on Friday, following a region-wide assessment of facilities’ compliance with Asean tourism standards.
This year 192 entities in Asean countries received awards, which were presented during the closing ceremony of the Asean Tourism Forum in Vientiane.
Five hotels in Laos won awards in the Asean Green Hotel Standard category, namely the Amantaka Hotel in Luang Prabang province, the Pullman Luang Prabang, Belmond la Residence Phou Vao in Luang Prabang, the Crowne Plaza Vientiane, and Le Grand Pakbeng Resort in Oudomxay province.
The Asean Green Hotel Standard aims to encourage hotels and resorts to conduct business in a responsible manner, taking into account the local environment and community, societal benefits, use of environmentally friendly products, efficient use of electricity and water, job creation, and use of locally made products.
In the Asean Clean Tourist City Standard category, Vientiane and Kaysone Phomvihane City in Savannakhet province won awards. The aim of this standard is to encourage major urban tourist destinations to engage in environmental protection, help mitigate the effects of climate change, and support the sustainable development of Asean cities.
In addition, four venues in Laos picked up Asean MICE Venue Standard awards for the high standard of their meeting facilities, namely the Pullman Luang Prabang, National Convention Centre, Luang Prabang View Hotel, the Grand Luang Prabang and the Dokchampa Hotel in Borikhamxay province.
One Asean MICE Venue Standard award for an exhibition venue went to Lao-ITECC in Vientiane, while festival venue awards went to the Crowne Plaza Vientiane, Saint Phila Convention Hall, Landmark Mekong Riverside Hotel, Don Chan Palace, and the Champassak Grand Hotel.
In the Asean Sustainable Tourism Award category, the Kua Lao restaurant in Vientiane and the Tad Yeuang restaurant in Champassak province were honoured, in the urban and rural tourism product categories respectively.
The purpose of this award is to motivate Asean tourism destinations to jointly develop tourism products and advise the government and business sectors on ways to improve their products and services in line with Asean standards.
The theme of the Asean Sustainable Tourism Awards for 2024 was “Food promotion for tourism”, focusing on advertising to promote the cuisine of each Asean member country in ways that emphasise each country’s food characteristics and local produce.
Laos also collected another 52 awards in the Asean Green Hotel Standard and Asean Sustainable Tourism Award categories, which will be announced next month
