KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) – Travel agencies promoting “Marriage Trips to Thailand” packages could face legal repercussions under Malaysia’s Islamic Family Law Enactment, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr. Mohd Na’im Mokhtar.

The minister explained that while such marriages may fulfill Islamic requirements, including having a wali (guardian) and witnesses, they violate the country’s legal framework.

“Although the marriage may be valid from a religious perspective, it contravenes national laws and regulations. We aim to nurture a society of Muslims who respect both religious laws and the nation’s legal system,” Mohd Na’im said during a press briefing.

The minister was responding to viral TikTok promotions offering “marry now, pay later” packages. These packages encourage couples to travel to Thailand for quick marriages, often bypassing Malaysian regulations.

One such package offers wedding services for as little as MYR1,699, sparking concerns over its legality and legitimacy. The minister urged the public to exercise caution and avoid being swayed by such offers, often advertised by agencies claiming to be registered with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM).

“These regulations are designed to ensure fairness and protect everyone’s rights. I urge the public to be vigilant with social media promotions as they may lead to scams,” he said.

“Some couples may rush into these arrangements only to find themselves scammed, with both their money and marriage plans disappearing. Many individuals are exploiting this for quick financial gains, leaving couples in distress,” he added.

The minister made these remarks while officiating the Al-Falah MADANI Scholarship Ceremony under the ‘myWaqafPTPTN’ initiative.
