ASEAN EVENT | International Day of Persons with Disabilities advocates their leadership amplification

The National and International Day of Persons with Disabilities was celebrated in Vientiane on December 18, highlighting the call for global inclusion to amplify the leadership of persons with disabilities.
Organised by the Organisation of Persons with Disabilities led by the Lao Disabled People’s Association, the event was supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United Nations in Laos, in partnership with the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, Disability Service Centre, Lao Association of the Blind, Hands of Hope, Association for Autism, Disabilities Mainstreaming Advisory Service Center, Women with Disabilities Association, Association for Aid and Relief, Japan (AAR), Humanity & Inclusion Laos (HI), World Education, and other organisations working on disability inclusion.

The global community marked this year’s celebration under the theme “Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future”, emphasing the importance of including persons with disabilities in global and local efforts, especially in light of current international policies and the upcoming 2025 World Summit for Social Development that aims to promote their leadership role in achieving the 2030 Agenda.
The event featured a vibrant showcase of booths from the Organisation of Persons with Disabilities, INGOs, and other stakeholders, fostering collaboration and knowledge-sharing.

Attendees enjoyed engaging activities such as singing, dancing, skits and games, creating an inclusive and enjoyable atmosphere that highlighted the creativity and resilience of persons with disabilities in Laos.
The celebration of National and International Day of Persons with Disabilities is a significant event that promotes disability-inclusive policies so that no person is left behind. The event also emphasised the importance of the meaningful contribution of persons with disabilities.
