M alaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has praised the leaders of both Thailand and Cambodia for agreeing to a ceasefire in their peace talks, calling it a reaffirmation of ASEAN’s “convening power” and a testament to the bloc’s ability to resolve conflict through dialogue, mutual trust and regional cooperation.
As the leader of Malaysia, which holds ASEAN’s rotating chairmanship this year, Anwar helped broker what he described as an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” between the Southeast Asian neighbors.
The truce that took effect at midnight on Monday followed days of deadly border clashes that erupted on July 24 and killed at least 38 people, mostly civilians, as well as displaced hundreds of thousands.
