The country has always advocated for an independent Palestine, and there are concerns the board will promote US and Israeli interests. Many are also wondering how Indonesia will afford the $1 billion USD membership fee. Dr Dino Patti Djalal, former Indonesian ambassador to the United States and the former Vice Foreign Minister of Indonesia tells Asia News Week’s Yvonne Yong why he thinks the Board of Peace “has many flaws”.

Discussions about the Board of Peace are currently suspended, with authorities prioritizing the safety and evacuation of Indonesian nationals in areas affected by the United States-Israeli war on Iran, the Foreign Ministry said

T he government is evaluating the country’s membership of the United States-led Board of Peace following recent developments involving the US-Israeli war against Iran, emphasizing that Indonesia’s foreign policy principles and national interests would serve as its primary considerations.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Yvonne Mewengkang said the government continued to pay close attention to political developments in the region as part of its assessment of the board’s membership.

“On our position about leaving the Board of Peace, we continue to carefully assess the matter by taking into account the principles of our Constitution, national interests and the broader objective of contributing to peace and stability,” Yvonne said in a press briefing in Jakarta on Friday.

“Our participation in the board will remain consistent with our support for stabilizing and reconstructing Palestine, such that any decision regarding our participation will be made through a comprehensive consideration of all these factors,” she went on to say.

But with over 519,000 Indonesians residing in the region of conflict, Yvonne underlined that citizen protection had taken precedence over any board-related deliberation.

“All discussions on the Board of Peace are currently suspended or put on hold,” said the spokesperson.

“We are focused on preparing anticipatory measures in response to the impact of the escalation.”
