According to Cayetano, Zalameda brings more than three decades of experience in the country’s justice system, having served in various capacities across the judiciary.

.
From his early years as a court official and public prosecutor, Zalameda went on to serve in the Court of Appeals before joining the Supreme Court.
.
“His experience across the different levels of our judicial system gives him a comprehensive understanding of the courts and the people they serve,” the PCO chief said.

Meanwhile, the Palace official also thanked Gesmundo for his dedicated service to the judiciary and the nation.

.
Zalameda was among three Supreme Court associate justices previously floated as possible successors to Gesmundo, alongside Associate Justices Ramon Paul L. Hernando and Henri Jean Paul B. Inting, who penned the June 10, 2026, Supreme Court First Division decision acquitting former First Lady Imelda Marcos of seven counts of graft, overturning the Sandiganbayan’s 2018 conviction after ruling that the prosecution failed to establish her guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
.
The ruling prompted speculation that it could influence President Marcos’ choice of the next chief justice, but Malacañang dismissed those claims as lacking factual basis and stressed that the administration respects the Supreme Court’s independence.
