POLITICS-ELECTION: PETALING JAYA – History in the making in Langkawi, says Zaid
PETALING JAYA: Former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has said history is in the making in Langkawi and he wants to be a witness of that moment.
“I want to be a participant and a witness to this moment in history, and see for myself if there is such a thing as gratitude in the annals of Malaysian politics,” he posted in his blog titled “Langkawi”today.
Zaid said he would stay in Langkawi for the next three weeks to witness Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s election bid.
“Mahathir is the person many people talk about nowadays, and judging by the massive crowd that assembled at the rally at Padang Mat Sirat where he spoke on Sunday, he has a good chance of winning in this constituency,” he said.
“Whatever the outcome, it’s going to be a historic polling day on 9 May, and that’s why I have decided to remain in Langkawi for the next three weeks. He also went to say having chatted with the locals there, where some were said to have lamented on difficulty in obtaining jobs.”
Mahathir’s candidacy was announced by PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail recently at Padang Matsirat, which was witnessed by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi) president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Pribumi deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, and Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu.
The announcement ended months of speculation on where Mahathir would be fielded.
There was speculation that he would contest in his old Kedah seat of Kubang Pasu, or in Malaysia’s administrative capital of Putrajaya.
Known as the Jewel of Kedah, Langkawi will be expecting a three-cornered fight between BN, PH and opposition PAS.
Located some 30km off Kedah, the parliamentary constituency comprises Langkawi island and more than 100 smaller islands. / The Sun Daily / Posted on 17 April 2018 – 07:36pm / Last updated on 17 April 2018 – 07:43pm / Elly Fazaniza / [email protected] / All photographs, news, editorials, opinions, information, data, others have been taken from the Internet ..aseanews.net | [email protected] / For comments, Email to : Aseanews.Net | [email protected] | Contributor:-
