THE Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for Community and Corporate Affairs, AKP Mochtan stressed the media’s important role in the ASEAN community-building process.
“The ASEAN Media Forum (AMF) aims to enhance our partnership with the region’s media leaders, and keep them abreast of the opportunities and challenges that ASEAN faces as we move ahead toward realising our goals and aspirations,” he said.
“This can enable them to communicate ASEAN’s initiatives, achievements and overall stories objectively to our people.”
He made these comments at the second AMF held on May 4 in Singapore.
The forum saw numerous ASEAN-related issues discussed during a dialogue session hosted between 30 media representatives and prominent bloggers from the 10 ASEAN member countries and the region’s thought leaders.
The forum was jointly organised by the Asean Secretariat and the Deutsche Gessellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) in collaboration with the S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, with support from AirAsia.
The forum, held at the Nanyang Technological University Alumni House Singapore, opened with a speech by Tan Chuan-Jin, the current Speaker of the Singapore Parliament and Chair of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly.
He spoke about the role of parliamentarians in ASEAN integration and ASEAN’s consensus-building approach.
Professor Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-Large and Chairman of the Centre for International Law at the National University of Singapore (NUS), joined Ambassador Kishore Mahbubani, the former Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, in a panel discussion focussing on ASEAN’s relations with the major world powers.
The forum’s highlight was the sit-down with former Indonesian Foreign Minister Dr RM Marty, who shared his insights on regional issues and the relevance of ASEAN in the next 50 years. / May 21, 2018| Rokiah Mahmud in Singapore |
