Big Bang for Myanmar bookworms
In two weeks time, Yangon will host the biggest book sale in the world – the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale – which is scheduled from January 18 to 28 at the Myanmar Event Park (MEP) in Yangon.
It will be a 24/7 book sale for 11 consecutive days with over one million books on the table with discounts ranging from 50 percent to 90pc. This would definitely be heaven for all bookworms, near and far.
Selected invitees will have a chance to attend a special VIP Day on January 17, a day before it opens to general public to get first dibs to all the books. Hundreds of tickets for the VIP Day will also be given out through contests on the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale Yangon’s social media pages.
Books available during the sale range from novels, science fiction, romance, literature, graphic novels, business books, architecture books, cookbooks and more. There will also be a wide array of children’s books for all ages such as story books, activity books, board books, coloring books, picture books and also interactive books.
The Big Bad Wolf Book Sale is also known as Asia’s biggest seller of augmented reality (AR) books and the exclusive seller of Little Hippo AR books. Children will be able to read, play and learn with Little Hippo AR books as it uses cutting-edge AR technology to revolutionize reading for the next generation. It is a useful tool to encourage children to read more as it makes reading fun.
In 2019, the sale – which was founded in Malaysia in 2009 – will mark its 10th year as an established book sale that is greatly loved by many across Asia. Aside from Malaysia, the event has been to Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and the United Arab Emirates.
.
Myo Aung, director of Ready 2 Read Myanmar and the organiser of the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale Yangon, said the sale is aimed to help improve the English proficiency of the Myanmar citizens as the country is developing rapidly.
“Myanmar is experiencing tremendous socio-economic change and there is an increasing demand for affordable books due to the growing importance of English proficiency,” he said.
We understand that establishing a knowledge-based economy, nurturing the next generation of readers and embracing change in Myanmar, in line with the government’s policies and goals can be achieved by igniting a reading movement in Myanmar,” he added.
Andrew Yap, founder of the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale, underscored the importance of reading in order to enhance learning and improve the language proficiency of the children.
“Reading can enhance imagination and creative thinking, vocabulary and overall communication skills. It is very important for children and young adults to get exposed to books and make reading a habit,” he said. “Parents should encourage their young ones to read more as early as possible as reading is a habit that should be instilled from a young age.”

Icons of Courage photo exhibit
Photographer Jens Uwe Parkitny hopes to immortalise the tradition of tattooing among Karen men on their thighs, backs, and bottoms through his lens in an ongoing photo exhibit at the Goethe Institute Myanmar compound in Bahan Township. The exhibition will run until January 10.
Parkitny travelled to remote villages in Kayin State in search of people with leg tattoos, and successfully documented them in his photos. The professional lensman is not new to the local audience or to taking photographs of men’s tattoos. Three years ago he published a photography book entitled “Marked for Life”, which was the result of his research on the facial tattoos of women in Chin state.
In his photo exhibit, Parkitny tried to capture the different figures and figurines which were found on the thighs of Karen men who willingly showed their tattoos to his inquisitive eyes.
.
The body tattoos photographed by Parkitny are articulate, detailed, and attractive as they show the dexterity and skills of the tattoo masters. It is common belief among the Myanmar people that before the tattoo master starts working on an individual, he needs to undergo a day-long fast so the ink becomes more potent and provides the subject strength.
Parkitny said it took him deep into the mountains and far into remote villages in search of his subjects and the traditional tattoos he wanted to immortalize in his exhibit. He chose only subjects who were still bearing these ancient symbols of bravery and manhood.
Old tattoo masters use about two foot long brass rods with three different segments. The double pronged end piece with two inch silts left long lasting marks on the skins of the person who undergone tattooing.
According to Myanmar literature, there are over 60 different figurines used in tattoos such as ogres, Keinnari birds, garudas, black cats, deer, turtles, quail, monkey, peacock, and geckos that were commonly etched on the flesh during the traditional tattooing ritual.
