Jakarta : ‘Turah’ to Represent Indonesia at 2018 Oscars

The Indonesian film “Turah,” or “Leftovers,” directed by Wicaksono Wisnu Legowo, is officially on the road to next year’s prestigious Academy Awards, where it will compete in the category Best Foreign Language Film.
The film, produced by Ifa Isfansyah, will compete against other foreign films before the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences finally narrows them down to five nominees.
“Turah,” which was on a limited release last year and finally secured screening slots at several cinemas last month, takes a closer look at the societal problems in the poverty-ridden Tirang village, located on the north coast of Tegal, Central Java.
The feature-length film has been chosen to represent Indonesia at the Oscars because of its strong presence. It narrates the life of the villagers, who live in pitiful conditions with a lack of clean water and electricity.
“The power of ‘Turah’ is its honesty and innocence of the dialogue that takes place amid hypocrisy and a humanitarian crisis,” senior actress Christine Hakim said during a press conference at XXI Plaza Indonesia in Central Jakarta on Tuesday (19/09).
Christine heads the 2017 committee working under the auspices of the Indonesian Film Companies Association (PPFI) to select and nominate local films for the Oscars.
Other members of the committee include producer Fauzan Zidny, cinematographer Roy Lolang, screenwriter Alim Sudio, director Benni Setiawan, and actors Reza Rahadian and Marcella Zalianty.
PPFI chairman Firman Bintang said he expects the government to help with the finances, especially to pay for promotions and advertisements.
“Therefore, the news of Indonesian films, which will be sent to the 2018 Oscars 2018, will resonate and be heard by many networks and industry players around the world, which in turn will impact development of our film industry,” he said. The 90th The Academy Awards, known officially as the Oscars, is slated to take place at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, Los Angeles, on March 4, 2018.
