A new water supply facility has opened in Hadxaifong district, to distribute water to one village in Hadxaifong and two villages in Pakngum district. Piping is now being installed so water can be delivered to numerous households. Vientiane Times visited the site to ask staff and local people about the benefits.

Mr Xaiyalath Sivilay, an official at the water supply centre: This facility has the capacity to supply about 1,500 cubic metres of water per day. More than 100 families have registered to be connected to the system. We are now installing pipes to these households. When the pipes are ready, the families will soon get water and I know everyone in the three villages is very happy at this prospect. This facility will benefit the villagers in many ways. They will have clean, piped water, which will make their lives easier. They normally use water from a well or pump, but it’s not as clean as treated and piped water. Our water supply is clean and safe because the water is treated so that pathogenic organisms are removed. We explain the details of the water supply plant and its function to villagers as well as how the pipes are maintained. People register for connection to the system voluntarily – we don’t push them. The cost of installation and other services is reasonable and is properly regulated. The monthly water bill depends how much each family uses. I advise families to use water carefully because every drop costs money. To maintain the water supply system, families should regularly check the pipes and contact our facility if there is any problem, so that our staff can help.

Mrs Done Singnavongsa, a resident of Makhiew village: Along with other people here, I’m very pleased that we’ll soon have piped water because we have waited for it for decades. I think it will benefit us a lot. We will have clean water for everyday use such as for cooking, washing, and even drinking. Piped water will make our lives easier and we can also use it to water our flowers, vegetables and other crops. I would like to thank the authorities for building this treatment plant and supplying us with clean water.

Mrs May Chansavong, a resident of Nalong village: My family has registered for piped water and now we are waiting for the pipes to be installed. Hopefully, the staff at the water supply facility will finish their work soon. I think the cost is reasonable and not very expensive. All the families in my village currently use water from wells, or we pump it and get it from the river and the rain. From now on, we will have piped water and our lives will be much better. It will also be healthier as the water we use will be cleaner. Our lives will be improved in many ways.

Mr Song Thavone, a resident of Maknao village: My family wants to register for connection to the piped water system but we aren’t ready yet. We will have to wait for some time because we don’t have enough money yet. In my opinion, the new water supply will improve our way of life a great deal. We can use the piped water in many ways, including for manufacturing and industrial activities. It will enable the recipient villages to be more modern and developed. There are also other villages in this area that don’t have piped water yet so the authorities should try to ensure that these areas also get connected up to a water supply facility.
