On Thursday night, the network released a press statement confirming the 21-year-old celebrity’s withdrawal from the much-awaited remake of Mars Ravelo’s classic komiks series on film.
The statement read, “ABS-CBN and Star Cinema regretfully announce their acceptance of Liza Soberano’s decision to withdraw from the Darna’ movie project due to medical reasons.
“Liza suffered a finger bone fracture while doing a fight scene on the set of ‘Bagani’ last year. She is still undergoing treatment and recovering from the trauma. Unfortunately, after consultation with her doctors, it was deemed best for Liza not to pursue the project as the injury shall hamper her from effectively doing the movie stunts required.
“ABS-CBN and Star Cinema understand Liza’s condition, respect her decision, and wish her well on her recovery.

“Meanwhile, the preparation for the Darna movie continues as ABS-CBN and Star Cinema remain fully committed in telling the well-loved story of the Filipina superheroine and have started the selection process for the new actress who will bring the iconic character to life on the big screen.”
The network also aired an interview with the star on Thursday night where a visibly heartbroken Soberano narrated how injury has restricted her from performing Darna’s stunts ergo preventing her from giving her best portrayal of the role.

“I know that it’s just a finger but it’s a hindrance for me being confident in doing the scenes na alam kong may hesitation ako when doing it because I have to take care of the finger,” she tearfully explained.
“Of course I really wanted to do Darna. I invested so much time and so much effort physically. I was ready. I felt like I was ready before the incident but I don’t want the project to suffer just because I don’t feel like I could give Darna the justice she deserves.”
With such high expectations and anticipation for the movie, Soberano further confessed she suffered from insecurities given her injury.

“I felt like hindi ako buo anymore to do Darna. I was scared na I wouldn’t look as good doing my stunts because of the way my finger looks. And I’m not sure na babalik siya sa dati, like I would be able to make a fist. So of course I wanted to give my management, my bosses the best Darna that they could possibly have but I kinda felt insecure about it na rin.”
Soberano said she consulted her manager Ogie Diaz regarding her decision after which they met with the network executives to discuss her concerns before finally resigning from the project.
“They’re actually helping me — parang they’re inspiring me pa nga because they told me that I’m gonna have other projects naman after [Darna]. Akala ko if I backed out of Darna na I might not have a job anymore but they told me that just because I’m not doing [the project], it doesn’t mean na I’m any less of an artist to them.”
Asked for a message to her loyal fans who had been anticipating to see her as a superhero on the big screen, Soberano sincerely said, “I just want to say sorry to them that I let them down.”
The interview ended with the actress breaking down in tears.
