TOKYO, Japan: Cambodian Embassy in Japan cautioned- warned Cambodian workers of job scams in Japan
The Cambodian Embassy in Japan on Friday cautioned Cambodians working in or intending to work in the country not to fall victim to brokers offering asylum or long-term work.
In a statement, the embassy noted that there are brokers who try to cheat Cambodian workers by saying that they can secure them refugee status to live permanently in Japan.
“Cambodian people, especially trainees who have been working in Japan or people who want to work in Japan, please be careful and avoid being cheated by brokers who promise high salaried jobs, guarantee getting work permits and help in seeking asylum in Japan,” it said.
In February, Labour Minister Ith Samheng said there are more than 9,100 Cambodian workers in Japan, earning an average of $1,500 per month.
Moeun Tola, executive director at Centre for Alliance of Labour and Human Rights, yesterday said that he supports the embassy’s efforts to prevent exploitation of Cambodian workers.
“The problem is that they are paid wages as trainees but have to work full hours like permanent workers,” he said. “I hope the government will work with the Japanese government to address the issue.” / Khuon Narim / Khmer Times
