Sibu taekwondo duo strike gold in Sarawak CM Borneo Cup

SIBU: Sibu Rajang Taekwondo Club (RTC) bagged two gold, one silver and five bronze medals from the 2017 Borneo Cup Sarawak Chief Minister International Taekwondo Championship held in Kuching last weekend.

Sisters Erica and Tiffany Yew are the toast of the team when they brought back a gold medal each.

Kong Jia Shuen won the silver while the bronze medallists were Tie Sing Da, Tie Ton Siong, Tommy Pian, Sydney Yew and Crystal Lee Wan Ning.

RTC head coach Thomas Tang described their performance as one of the best outings in recent years.

“This was an international championship and lifting the gold medal is no mean feat. ‘Syabas’ to my exponents for a job well down,” he said.

The achievement, he added, was beyond expectations and surpassed results obtained in previous years.

The tournament attracted about 500 exponents from 17 countries including China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Burma, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, Pakistan, Nepal, New Zealand, Australia and Brunei.

Meanwhile, Tang also revealed that Sing Da and Ton Siong have been shortlisted for the state squad preparing for the 2018 Sukma.

“The duo will undergo intensive training next month before the final selection to be held next year,” he said.
