Six policemen remanded for alleged extortion

KUCHING: Six police personnel were remanded for three days today for being allegedly involved in money extortion.

State CID chief SAC Datuk Dev Kumar said the arrests came after two individuals lodged police reports in Batu Kawa and Sematan alleging that this group of rogue policemen had extorted money from them.
“Late last night and early this morning, teams from D9 IPK led by DSP Sarifudin Mustaffa arrested the six police personnel in their homes and work places in Kuching, Padawan and Lundu,” he said, noting that one of the suspects arrested is a 53-year old inspector attached to the administration department in the state police headquarters.

The other five are lower rank policemen aged between 25 and 32 years old attached to various units in the Kuching police district headquarters.

The cases are investigated as extortion under section 384 of the Penal Code.
