Some 108 Chinese monks entered northern Laos last week and are expected to pass through other provinces as their make their way on a pilgrimage to India.
According to an official from the Consulate General of China in Luang Prabang province yesterday, the group of monks are from Xi’an, Shaanxi province, China and entered the north of Laos last week crossing the border travelling on regular visas.
The Consulate General also informed this was not an official visit, just a private group, with the consulate not receiving any information from the monks.
The consulate was only informed via social media and learned the group of monks had taken a rest at Vat Pha-O in Luang Prabang province on October 11. The group would be travelling from Luang Prabang province to Vientiane province on October 12, then to Vientiane and passing through some central provinces and Champassak before entering Cambodia and Thailand ahead of reaching their final destination in India.
Local authorities in Luang Prang also confirmed the visit was a religious activity, so when the group arrived they only met with Lao monks at Vat Pha-O temple during their stopover.
The group of 108 monks from China will take several days to walk through many provinces in Laos on their pilgrimage to India.
